The objective of the survey is to provide data to the government for measuring the living standards of the population and the progress made in raising them. The survey data will permit a more effective formulation and implementation of policies designed to improve the welfare of the population.","coll_dates":[{"start":"1988-10","end":"1989-08","cycle":""}],"nation":[{"name":"Ghana","abbreviation":"GHA"}],"geog_coverage":"National","analysis_unit":"Households","data_kind":"Sample survey data [ssd]","notes":"The scope of Living Standards Survey 1988-1989 includes:\n\n- Household: Household roster, Housing, Education, Health, Economic activities, Migration, Agro-pastoral activities, Non-farm self-employment, Expenditure and inventory of durable goods, Food expenses and home production, Fertility, Other income, Credit and savings, Anthropometrics, Cognitive skills\n- Community: Demographic information, Economy and infrastructure, Education, Health, Agriculture\n- Price: Food, Pharmaceutical, Non-food\n- Primary School: School characteristics, Enrolment, School staff, Expenditures on schooling, Observations\n- Middle\/Junior Secondary School: School characteristics, Enrolment, School staff, Expenditures on schooling, Observations\n- Education: Mathematics questions, English reading questions\n- Health and family planning services: Characteristics of the facility, Services, Immunizations, Personnel, Beds, Equipment, Drug supply, Family planning (hours of operation\/services offered, personnel)\n- Drugstores, pharmacies and drug vendors: Characteristics of the facility, Hours of operation, Personnel, Vaccines and contraceptive supplies, Drug supplies"},"method":{"data_collection":{"sampling_procedure":"For the Ghana LSS an alternative procedure was adopted, which takes account of the changes in the measures of size for the selected EAs, but which has the merit of keeping all fieldwork quotas, and therefore the final sample size, fixed. The households in the 200 selected EAs were first listed in the field, and a ratio calculated for each EA (the number of households listed divided by the number of households counted in the census). In a few cases where EAs appeared to be very large, in terms of geographic spread or population size, a decision was made to divide the EA into smaller segments, and to select one segment at random; the number of households listed in this segment was then compared with the estimated size of the same segment in the 1984 Census. Using the same PPS method as described above, 200 'workloads' were then allocated among these 200 EAs, with probability proportional to this calculated ratio. With this method of allocation most EAs received one workload, but a few received two or three or none at all. At the next stage of sample selection 16 households were selected to make up each workload; thus an EA, for example, which received two workloads provided 32 households for the sample. The total sample therefore consisted of 3200 households, and the sample design provided a self-weighting sample, since each household in Ghana had an equal probability of being selected.","coll_mode":"Face-to-face [f2f]"}},"data_access":{"dataset_use":{"conf_dec":[{"txt":"https:\/\/microdata.worldbank.org\/index.php\/terms-of-use","required":"yes","form_no":"","uri":""}],"cit_req":"Use of the dataset must be acknowledged using a citation which would include:\n- the Identification of the Primary Investigator\n- the title of the survey (including country, acronym and year of implementation)\n- the survey reference number\n- the source and date of download\n\nExample:\nGhana Statistical Service (GSS) and The World Bank.
