The NFI is based on the collection of data in sample units distributed every 20 km throughout the Brazilian territory - or in shorter distances, depending on the specific interest of each region. Each sample unit must be visited by a trained team, which collects data on forest resources, such as diameter and height of the trees, collection of botanical material and soil samples, biological diversity, health and vitality of forests, stock. In addition, social-environmental functions are investigated through interviews with residents of the rural environment, allowing us to know about the uses of products and services of forests and their contribution to the family income.","coll_dates":[{"start":"2013","end":"","cycle":""}],"nation":[{"name":"Brazil","abbreviation":"BRA"}],"analysis_unit":"Plants","universe":"Communites living near forests and people that potentially use forest resources.","data_kind":"Maltese cross-shaped conglomerate","notes":"Biological diversity of forest resources;\nForest health and vitality; \nForest stocks;\nSocial and environmental functions of forests; \nUse of products and services from forests; \nContribution of forest products to family income; \nKnowledge about environmental agencies and public policies; \nEngagement in the protection and conservation of forests; \nPerceptions about climate change."},"method":{"data_collection":{"sampling_procedure":"The NFI standard grid consists of points equidistant at 20 km, called the 20 km x 20 km national standard grid. The densification of the grid may be necessary for special applications, e.g., in Brazil's protected areas, as a National Forest. These densifications can be 10 km x 10 km (level 2), 5 km x 5 km (level 3), and so on until 0,625 km x 0,625 km (level 6).\nA conglomerate is installed on each point of the National Grid of Sampling Points (GNPA). The conglomerate is shaped like the Maltese Cross, consisting of four rectangular subunits of fixed area, perpendicularly positioned and oriented towards the cardinal points and numbered from 1 to 4.\nThe size of the subunit is related to the characteristics of existing forests in Brazilian biomes. The Biomes 'Atlantic Forest', 'Cerrado', 'Caatinga', 'Pantanal' and 'Pampas' present subunits of ??1,000 m\u00b2 (20 m x 50 m); The Biome Amazon present subunits of 2,000 m\u00b2 (20 m x 100 m). Each of these sub-units is subdivided into 10 m x 10 m subplots.\nThe interviews is carried out with residents living near the conglomerates.
