The Monitoring System consists of primary data collected from households on a periodic basis (more or less every four months, depending on seasonality). FAO launched the round 10 household survey between 29 August and 25 September 2023 in Sierra Leone. The data were collected during the lean period through Computer-Assisted Telephone Interviews (CATI) across five provinces and the following sixteen districts: Bo, Bombali, Bonthe, Falaba, Kailahun, Kambia, Kenema, Kerene, Koinadugu, Kono, Moyamba, Port Loko, Pujehun, Tonkolili, Western Area Rural, and Western Area Urban. A total of 2803 households were surveyed. \n\nFor more information, see https:\/\/data-in-emergencies.fao.org\/pages\/monitoring.","coll_dates":[{"start":"2023-08-29","end":"2023-09-25","cycle":""}],"nation":[{"name":"Sierra Leone","abbreviation":"SLE"}],"geog_coverage":"National coverage","analysis_unit":"Households","data_kind":"Sample survey data [ssd]","notes":"The survey collected information on the following areas:\n- HOUSEHOLD: household information \n- INCOME SOURCES, SHOCKS: income changes, shocks experienced by households \n- CROP PRODUCTION: crops planted, area planted, area harvested, crop production difficulties \n- CROP MARKETING: crop sale difficulties, crop sale price \n- LIVESTOCK PRODUCTION: types of livestock present on holding, number of livestock, livestock production difficulties \n- LIVESTOCK MARKETING: livestock sale, livestock sale difficulties, livestock sale price \n- FISHERIES PRODUCTION: fish activity, comparison of fish production\n- FISHERIES MARKETING: fish sale, fish sale difficulties, fish sale price \n- FOOD SECURITY AND CONSUMPTION: food consumption, food utilization, comping strategies \n- NEEDS ASSISTANCE: open questions on the needs for assistance"},"method":{"data_collection":{"sampling_procedure":"Data were collected via computer-assisted telephone interviews (CATI) during the lean period, also known as the pre-harvest season. The survey covered 2803 households across all 5 provinces and 16 districts (administrative level 2): Bo, Bombali, Bonthe, Falaba, Kailahun, Kambia, Karene, Kenema, Koinadugu, Kono, Moyamba, Port Loko, Pujehun, Tonkolili, Western Area Rural, and Western Area Urban. The survey estimates are representative at the administrative level 2.\n\nThe sample design follows the same methodology as the previous round. Eligible respondents were required to be Sierra Leonean nationals aged 18 or older. The sampling prioritized panel respondents from previous face-to-face rounds (R2, R3, R5, R6, R7, R9). Contact was attempted for each panel respondent up to 15 times at varying times of day and on different days of the week. If the target was not reached, the process continued with contacts from previous rounds conducted via CATI (R1, R8) under the same calling protocol. As a last resort, random digit dialing (RDD) was employed to meet quotas. Quotas were established to reflect the expected proportion of agricultural households in the population.","coll_mode":["Computer Assisted Telephone Interview [cati]"],"research_instrument":"A link to the questionnaire has been provided in the downloads tab.","sources":[{"name":"","origin":"","characteristics":""}],"weight":"Base weights are applied and are sufficient for analysis, given the representativeness at administrative level 2.","cleaning_operations":"The datasets have been edited and processed for analysis by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, Data in Emergencies (DIEM) Hub at the Office of Emergencies and Resilience, with some dashboards and visualizations produced.
