          <![CDATA[The Brazilian National Dietary Survey 2017-2018 collected data following the probabilistic sampling of the main survey, which included a master sample and a representative sub-sample from the five macro regions of Brazil. Food consumption data were collected from 20 112 households, comprising a 34.7 percent sub-sample of the overall 57 920 households interviewed in the POF 2017-2019.

A two-stage cluster sampling design was adopted. This included geographic and statistical stratifications of the primary sampling units, which correspond to sectors or groups of sectors from the Demographic Census 2010 geographic base; and which followed the structure provided by the master sample designed by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE, Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística) for the Integrated Household Survey System (SIPD).

The primary sampling units (PSUs), forming the master sample, were selected using probability sampling proportional to the number of households in each sector within each final stratum. The sub-sample of PSUs for the National Dietary Survey 2017-2018 was selected through simple random sampling within each stratum. In the adopted design, the secondary sampling units were permanent private households, which were selected by simple random sampling without replacement from each of the selected PSUs.

After the process of selecting PSUs and households, PSUs were distributed across the four quarters of the survey. This ensured that, in each quarter, both geographic and socioeconomic strata were represented in the selected households interviewed in the POF 2017-2018.]]>

          Trained interviewers applied the Multiple-Pass Method to collect two non-consecutive 24-hour recall. The 24-hour recall interviews collected data on the name, preparation method, quantity of foods and beverages consumed, as well as the time and location of consumption. Interviewers also asked follow-up questions regarding the addition of ingredients such as olive oil, butter, margarine, sugar, sweetener, honey, molasses, mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, soy sauce, grated cheese, and cream to the reported foods. Methods of quantification included household measurements, standard units and standard portions.

          Each household in the POF sub-sample represents a certain number of permanent private households from the population (universe) from which the original sample was selected. As such, each household in the sub-sample is associated with a sample weight or expansion factor. When applied to the characteristics investigated by the POF, this factor allows for the estimation of quantities of interest for the entire survey population.

The expansion factors were initially calculated based on the sampling plan effectively used in the selection of the sub-sample, incorporating adjustments to compensate for non-response from the investigated units. Subsequently, these factors underwent calibration adjustments, a procedure that aimed to ensure that, for each Federation Unit (calibration domains), the estimated totals for the population in certain segments matched the respective totals obtained through the expansion of the original POF sample.

Three variables represent the expansion sample weights in the survey: ESTRATO_POF, COD_UPA, and WEIGHTING_FACTOR.
WEIGHTING_FACTOR: Final sampling weights (original survey variable "PESO_FINAL"). 
ESTRATO_POF: Stratification variable of the survey sampling design. This variable identifies the sampling strata used in the complex survey design.
COD_UPA: Primary Sampling Unit (PSU) identifier of the survey sampling design. This variable identifies the selected clusters (UPAs) and should be used in the analyses that account for the complex survey design.

WEIGHTING_FACTOR can be used alone to obtain weighted point estimates, but ESTRATO_POF and COD_UPA should also be used in analysis that account for the complex survey design, to allow for an accurate estimation of standard errors, confidence intervals, and statistical tests
