<abstract>
        <![CDATA[Ecuador has made efforts over the last 40 years to compile statistical information on the agricultural sector. The First National Agricultural Census by Sampling was conducted in 1954, followed by a National Agricultural Survey in 1968 and the Second National Agricultural Census of 1974 which was full enumeration.

The 3rd national agricultural census was carried out in 2000, in order to update structural information about the agricultural sector, and serve as a basis to re-establish a permanent information system. The census provided national and provincial level results.

More specifically, it had the following objectives:
1. Generate structural information on the agricultural sector.
2. Provide sufficient information for the re-establishment of a national system of agricultural statistics, which permanently measures the dynamics of the sector.
3. Strengthen institutional capacities, particularly of National Institute of Statistics and Census (INEC) and Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG) to conduct agricultural surveys by sampling.]]>

          <![CDATA[The National Agricultural Census (CNA) 2000 made use of a multiple sampling frame. It combined the use of two sample frames. The first frame was a list frame, the second was an Area Frame (SAF). This method is completely objective and efficient to achieve high accuracy of data and results, minimizes the cost, and allows estimations, and confidence intervals around the true population parameter.

The sample of areas of the CNA 2000 constituted the entire national territory, except the Galapagos Province.

The stratified sampling design was used considering the canton as a domain minimum of study, with optimal fixation. Sample selection was carried out in in two stages. In the first stage, there was a random and systematic selection of Primary Sampling Units (PSUs), with Probability Proportional to Size (PPS). In the second stage, random selection was done, with probabilities equal to the Sampling Segments (SSs) into which the units of the first stage were divided.

Initial feasibility approaches regarding the national sample size promoted the use of approximately 10,000 SSs, assuming that this size allows for estimating results per canton. With the sample size established a priori, its affixation or distribution between provinces, cantons and strata, made use of area information from planted crops like rice, banana, coffee, corn (of all varieties), African palm, potatoes and pastures; in addition to the total arable land planted. This information was taken from the National Survey of Area and Production, carried out by the statistical body in 1995.]]>
