    Abstract

The Survey of Migration and Women's Empowerment in Agriculture in Nepal was conducted by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in collaboration with the Nepa School in the districts of Jhapa, Makwanpur, Nawalparasi, Rolpa, and Achham. The purpose of the survey was to study migration particularly as it relates to women’s work, empowerment, and welfare. Information was collected on the determinants and consequences of migration, and it allows researchers to identify the linkages between migration of family members and changes in women’s empowerment. The survey also contains information on the impact of remittances and other transfers, employment, and food security.

    Sampling

    Sampling Procedure

The survey was administered to 1000 households (500 migrant and 500 non-migrant households). To select respondents, a multi-stage sampling procedure was conducted. First, using non-probability sampling five clusters from five development regions with dense migration population were selected. To select these five clusters, FAO experts used their judgement. In the second stage, proportional numbers of village development committees (VDCs) or municipalities were selected from the sample districts through random sampling. Finally, the VDCs were divided into wards. From each municipality two wards were selected, and from each ward 20 households were interviewed. The households were selected through stratification based on the presence of migrant household members to ensure households with migrants represent at least 50% of the sample. Within each household, the most knowledgeable household member completed the household questionnaire. In migrant households, the A-WEAI module was completed by the spouse or partner of the migrant or another working-age woman if the migrant was not married. Whereas in non-migrant households, the A-WEAI module was completed by an equal number of male and female working-age members. In the event of multiple couples, the respondent who was more involved in agriculture was randomly selected.

    Deviations from the Sample Design

In Kakada VDC of Makwanpur district, the sampled ward was ward number 3. However, due to a small population in the ward, it would have resulted in an inadequate number of households being sampled. Thus, wards two and three were combined in order to get a larger sample. Similarly, in Makwanpur, Sarikhet VDC the initial sampled ward i.e., ward number 7 had to be replaced by ward number 6 due to flooding in ward number 7.

    Weighting

    No weigthing.

    Data Collection Notes

The pre-test for the survey took place between July 6th, 2017- July 8th, 2017 and it included checking whether or not respondents would understand the questions. On July 25, 2017 a pilot test was conducted in Kushadevi in the district of Kavrepalanchowk. To conduct the field test all enumerators, supervisors and other members of the Nepa School team attended. Based on feedback from the pilot session, questions were adapted. Then, on July 27, 2017, the enumerators were divided in pairs to conduct mock sessions with each other to become familiar with the questions, tablet, and software. On average, each interview took two hours, but as enumerators became familiar with the questionnaire, the time decreased by 15 minutes on average.
