    Abstract

    The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has developed a monitoring system in 26 food crisis countries to better understand the impacts of various shocks on agricultural livelihoods, food security and local value chains. The Monitoring System consists of primary data collected from households on a periodic basis (more or less every four months, depending on seasonality). FAO conducted this sixth-round survey in Afghanistan which reached a random sample of 6 082 rural households in 26 provinces, representative at administrative level 1. The survey targeted the provinces of: Badakhshan, Badghis, Balkh, Bamyan, Daykundi, Farah, Faryab, Ghazni, Ghor, Hilmand, Hirat, Jawzjan, Kabul, Kandahar, Khost, Kunar, Kunduz, Maidan Wardak, Nangarhar, Nimroz, Nuristan, Paktika, Parwan, Samangan, Takhar and Uruzgan. Face to face interviews were conducted from 19 January to 15 February 2023.

    • LIVESTOCK PRODUCTION : types of livestock present on the holding, number of livestock, livestock production difficulties
    • LIVESTOCK MARKETING : livestock sale, livestock sale difficulties, livestock sale price
    • FISHERIES PRODUCTION : fish activity, comparison of fish production
    • FISHERIES MARKETING : fish sale, fish sale difficulties, fish sale price
    • FOOD SECURITY AND CONSUMPTION : food consumption, food utilization, coping strategies
    • NEEDS ASSISTANCE : open questions on the needs for assistance

    Sampling Procedure

    The survey reached a random sample of 6 082 rural households in 26 provinces, representative at administrative level 1. The provinces of: Badakhshan, Badghis, Balkh, Bamyan, Daykundi, Farah, Faryab, Ghazni, Ghor, Hilmand, Hirat, Jawzjan, Kabul, Kandahar, Khost, Kunar, Kunduz, Maidan Wardak, Nangarhar, Nimroz, Nuristan, Paktika, Parwan, Samangan, Takhar and Uruzgan. Targeted households were randomly selected using two-step cluster sampling. Twenty-nine clusters were selected at administrative level 1 and then eight households were selected in each cluster. A high proportion of the households (86 percent) were involved in the agriculture sector.

    Access conditions

    Micro datasets disseminated by FAO shall only be allowed for research and statistical purposes. Any user which requests access working for a commercial company will not be granted access to any micro dataset regardless of their specified purpose. Users requesting access to any datasets must agree to the following minimal conditions:

    • The micro dataset will only be used for statistical and/or research purposes;
    • Any results derived from the micro dataset will be used solely for reporting aggregated information, and not for any specific individual entities or data subjects;
    • The users shall not take any action with the purpose of identifying any individual entity (i.e. person, household, enterprise, etc.) in the micro dataset(s). If such a disclosure is made inadvertently, no use will be made of the information, and it will be reported immediately to FAO;
    • The micro dataset cannot be re-disseminated by users or shared with anyone other than the individuals that are granted access to the micro dataset by FAO.
