    Series Information

This ninth-round survey was conducted between 7 November and 16 December 2023. The eighth round survey was conducted between 29 July and 23 August 2023, the seventh round between 17 February and 21 March 2023, the sixth round between 7 September and 8 October 2022, the fifth-round survey between 17 March and 2 April 2022, fourth-round survey was conducted between 16 October and 24 November 2021.

    Abstract

FAO has developed a monitoring system in 26 food crisis countries to better understand the impacts of various shocks on agricultural livelihoods, food security and local value chains. The Monitoring System consists of primary data collected from households on a periodic basis (more or less every four months, depending on seasonality). FAO launched this ninth-round computer-assisted telephone interviews between 7 November and 16 December 2023 in Bangladesh. This survey reached 6 499 households and was representative at district level, covering 64 districts across all eight divisions of the country: Barisal, Chattogram, Dhaka, Khulna, Mymensingh, Rajshahi, Rangpur and Sylhet. The survey also targeted the hotspots identified in the Bangladesh Delta Plan 2100: Barind and the Drought-Prone Areas, Chars, Chittagong Hill Tracts, Coastal Zone, Cross-Cutting Area, and Haor and the Flash Flood Areas. Sampling

    Sampling Procedure

The sample is stratified at the district level (admin 2). There are 64 districts in the country, and each stratum aims to reach a minimum of 97 households to obtain results at the district level with a confidence level of 95 percent and a Margin of Error (MoE) of plus or minus 5 percent.

There is a separate and independent stratum for fishers. The DIEM team obtained a fleet registry from the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock in Bangladesh. There was no baseline information available on this sample frame, so it was decided not to integrate this sample frame within the more general framework to ensure that it does not affect the representativeness of the final sample. However, there is a strong need for more information on the fisheries sector in Bangladesh. Ultimately, a separate stratum is analyzed independently for this sub-group. The list consists of 275 contacts, and vessels are randomly selected until a sample of 100 vessels is reached.

In total, the final sample size expected to be 6 308 households covering the 64 districts and including a separate sub-sample of the fleet registry. Due to time and cost constraints, the CATI survey method was used to target households pulling samples from an existing panel and Random Digit Dialing (RDD).

    Weighting

Weights were applied to improve the representativeness of the sample by adjusting for:

    • Demographic distribution at the district level (admin 2), to account for population size and correct for unequal probabilities of selection across regions
    • Socioeconomic status, using access to toilet facilities as a wealth proxy, applied at the administrative level 1

These weights help correct for both sampling imbalances and potential response bias linked to household wealth.
