The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has developed a monitoring system in 26 food crisis countries to better understand the impacts of various shocks on agricultural livelihoods, food security and local value chains. The Monitoring System consists of primary data collected from households on a periodic basis. FAO conducted the eighth-round survey through face-to-face interviews between 24 January and 29 February 2024. This round covered only rural enumeration areas and reached 9494 rural households across all 34 provinces of Afghanistan. The findings are representative at the provincial (administrative level 1) scale.

A two-stage cluster sampling method was applied. In the first stage, an equal number of clusters per province was selected using Probability Proportional to Size (PPS). In the second stage, a fixed number of households within each cluster was randomly selected and interviewed. Data collection covered all 34 provinces of Afghanistan, reaching a random sample of 9494 rural households.
Surveys are designed based on country-specific needs, objectives, and constraints. The sample design and size aim to achieve a 10 percent margin of error, a 95 percent confidence level, administrative-level granularity, and sufficient sample sizes for key variables within target populations, including agricultural households.
Data were weighted by demographics (based on the total rural population per stratum) and a wealth proxy (access to drinkable water) at administrative level 1.
