The study employed multistage sampling. In the first stage, the sampling frame of 156 enumeration districts was constructed, and enumeration districts were randomly selected from this list: ten enumeration districts from Saint Kitts' out of a total 117 districts; and five enumeration districts from Nevis' out of a total 39 districts.
In the second stage, households were identified within the enumeration districts using a systematic random sampling procedure.
In the third stage, the Kish selection procedure was used to select one person per household to participate in the survey as the respondent.
The sample size was estimated based on the number of households required to ensure representativeness at the national level and to allow for comparability between geographical areas, as well as to achieve a valid estimation of foods and beverages, macronutrients and micronutrients among the population. The calculated sample size was inflated by 20 percent to account for non-response. A total sample size of n = 960 was selected: proportionately divided between the two islands, to ensure the representativeness of the study population on each island. There were 640 participants from Saint Kitts and 320 from Nevis, with an equal number of males and females on each island.
The level of confidence and margin of error used in the sample size calculations were 95 percent (z = 1.96) and 5 percent (e = 0.05), respectively. Due to insufficient historical information on baseline levels of the nutrition indicators, an estimated prevalence of 50 percent (p = 0.5) was utilized to ensure the most conservative sample size.
The sampling design effect (Deff) was 1.5. Stratification was based on gender and island, not on age.
Sample weights were computed by considering the population proportion/sample proportion for each grouping by island and gender.

The 24-hour recall was collected with the aid of computerized tablets equipped with the Caribbean version of the myfood24® software, a fully automated online dietary assessment database used to collect and analyze dietary data. The development of the Caribbean version of myfood24® comprised a comprehensive country-specific food list for Saint Kitts and Nevis that contains branded and generic food and drink items, including local foods dishes and recipes from Saint Kitts and Nevis, St Vincent and the Grenadines, and the wider Caribbean. The compiled list of foods and beverages were classified into 16 food groups and subgroups (cereals and their products; roots, tubers, plantains and their products; pulses, seeds and nuts and their products; milk and milk products; eggs and their products; fish, shellfish and their products; meat and meat products; vegetables and their products; fruits and their products; fats and oils; sweets and sugars; spices and condiments; beverages; food for particular nutritional uses; savory snacks; and composite dishes) with 30 385 generic and branded food and drink items, including local dishes and recipes as well as a quantification list of 164 881 items. Also included were household measurements, standard units, and photos to aid portion size estimation. The database also contains a recipe builder where users can log ingredient combinations.
The 24-hour recall was collected on both weekdays and weekends, and it was repeated after an average of 32 days on 400 subjects.
