Individual Food Consumption/Dietary Survey [hh/ifcs]
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR, भारतीय आयुर्विज्ञान अनुसंधान परिषद) established the National Nutrition Monitoring Bureau (NNMB) in 1972 in the States of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Orissa, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh. The NNMB has been carrying out repeat surveys in both rural and tribal areas, by visiting the same villages about every 10 years. The general objective of this survey was to assess the current diet and nutritional status and time trends among rural population in all 10 NNMB States.

The survey was a cross-sectional community-based survey, carried out in 10 States of India, and it employed a multi-stage probability sampling procedure.

Individual 24-hour quantitative dietary recalls were collected from all survey respondents, covering both weekdays and weekends. No repeated dietary recalls were collected. A single respondent provided information for themselves and every other household member (e.g. the person responsible for cooking). A parent or other guardian was a proxy respondent for preschool children aged under 7 or for participants with communication disorders (e.g., hearing impairment, intellectual disability).
