Agricultural Survey [ag/oth]
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has developed a monitoring system in 26 food crisis countries to better understand the impacts of various shocks on agricultural livelihoods, food security and local value chains. The Monitoring System consists of primary data collected from households on a periodic basis (more or less every four months, depending on seasonality). FAO launched the Round 7, face-to-face interview survey on 28 September 2023 to monitor agricultural livelihoods and food security in Afghanistan. Data collection ended on 17 October 2023. This seventh-round survey reached a random sample of 9560 rural households in all 34 provinces of Afghanistan, representative at administrative level 1.

The survey collected information on:

- FISHERIES MARKETING: fish sale, fish sale difficulties, fish sale price
- FOOD SECURITY AND CONSUMPTION: food consumption, food utilization, comping strategies
- NEEDS ASSISTANCE: open questions on the needs for assistance

Sampling
The survey reached 9560 rural households across all 34 provinces of Afghanistan and is representative at administrative level 1. The survey utilized a two-step cluster sampling design, with 27 clusters selected per province, and 10 households randomly selected per cluster. Households were surveyed face-to-face to monitor the impacts of shocks on livelihoods and food security. Interviews were conducted between 28 September and 17 October 2023, corresponding to the post-harvest period across the majority of surveyed areas.
Surveys are designed based on country-specific needs, objectives, and constraints. The sample design ensures a 10 percent margin of error and a 95 percent confidence level at the target administrative level and aims to achieve these precision levels for key variables within the targeted populations, including agricultural households.
A standard weighting approach is used, though the specific combination of weights depends on factors such as subgroup quotas, availability of baseline data, and appropriate context-specific wealth indicators.

Data processing
The datasets have been edited and processed for analysis by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, Data in Emergencies (DIEM) Hub at the Office of Emergencies and Resilience, with some dashboards and visualizations produced.
