    Abstract

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has developed a monitoring system in 26 food crisis countries to better understand the impacts of various shocks on agricultural livelihoods, food security and local value chains. The Monitoring System consists of primary data collected from households on a periodic basis (more or less every four months, depending on seasonality). FAO launched the Round 8, Computer-Assisted Telephone Interviews (CATI) survey on 29 July to monitor agricultural livelihoods and food security in Bangladesh. Data collection ended on 23 August 2023. This eighth-round survey reached 3129 households, and was representative at division level (administrative level 1). The survey targeted all eight divisions of the country: Barisal, Chattogram, Dhaka, Khulna, Mymensingh, Rajshahi, Rangpur, and Sylhet.

    Sampling

    Sampling Procedure

Surveys are designed based on country-specific needs, objectives, and constraints. They aim to achieve a 10 percent margin of error, a 95 percent confidence level, administrative-level granularity, and sufficient sample sizes for key target populations, including agricultural households. Specifically, this eighth-round survey reached 3129 households, representative at division level (administrative level 1). The survey targeted all eight divisions of the country: Barisal, Chattogram, Dhaka, Khulna, Mymensingh, Rajshahi, Rangpur, and Sylhet. The survey also targeted the hotspots identified in the Bangladesh Delta Plan 2100: Barind and the Drought-Prone Areas, Chars, Chittagong Hill Tracts, Coastal Zone, Cross-Cutting Area, and Haor and the Flash Flood Areas.

    Weighting

The sample was weighted using a combination of sampling and post-stratification weights. Sampling weights accounted for unequal selection probabilities across administrative level 1 regions, based on population size and the proportion of agricultural households. Post-stratification weights were applied using access to flush toilets as a wealth proxy to correct for response bias.
