Agricultural Census [ag/census]
The first agricultural census in Argentina was conducted in 1888. Since then, twelve censuses were carried out in 1895, 1908, 1914, 1930, 1947, 1952, 1960, 1969, 1988, 2002, 2008 and 2018. The Agricultural Census 2018 is the thirteenth agricultural census conducted in the country.
The Agricultural Census (Censo Nacional Agropecuario) 2018 is a large-scale statistical operation to collect high-quality data on the country's structure of agriculture. This data is necessary to understand the agricultural sector's dynamics and to support the design of public policies.

The census scope covered agricultural (crops and livestock) and forestry activities.
The questionnaire collected information on:
The Agricultural Census 2018 covered the entire country.
The statistical unit for the Agricultural Census 2018 was the agricultural holding (explotación agropecuaria or EAP), defined as "the organizational unit of agricultural production with at least 500 m2 within a single province, regardless of the number of parcels (non-contiguous lands) that:
Agricultural holdings comprised both holdings in household and non-household sectors.

For the purposes of the census, the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC, Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Censos) cartography team divided the territory of each province into census “fractions” and then into “radios”. Radio was the smallest unit, which was classified into three types: rural, urban, and mixed (rural and urban). This division was fundamentally linked to the population census.
Census radios classified as rural and mixed were covered by the census; urban areas were excluded. In some provinces, rural radios (located in mountainous areas, deserts, lake areas) considered lacking in agricultural production were excluded. In this way, the census framework covered by Agricultural Census 2018 was established.
The census was conducted using complete enumeration.
Data was collected using a single electronic questionnaire, consisting of several parts and sections. The Agricultural Census 2018 covered 22 out of 23 essential items recommended in the WCA 2020.

The census fieldwork involved 24 provincial coordinators (one in every province and one in the autonomous city of Buenos Aires), 83 zone bosses, 83 auxiliaries (assistants), 476 supervisors and 2791 enumerators.
QUALITY ASSURANCE
A mobile application containing four interrelated application modules was realized to fully integrate all the tools of the census operation, namely: news registration module; geographic module (based on the cartographic material); questionnaire module (for data capture) with six thematic sections; and specific questionnaires module. This application led to an improvement in data quality and a reduction in the time between data collection and analysis. The application was also articulated with a computerized management system that allowed the administration, monitoring, and control of the field operations.
Some internal consistency issues remained after data processing; therefore, an additional check was performed for each surveyed farm by analyzing the internal coherence of the key data with respect to control variables and total values with respect to the partial values that composed them.
The data correction system was realized with a free license software, accessible through user authentication with password, and it also served as a license-free data repository. This system was implemented with web tools and accessed through an Internet browser. The system was not publicly accessible, rather access was restricted to the internal network of the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses. In 2020, the staff reconciled final census data. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the publication of the final census report was rescheduled to April 2021.
DATA PROCESSING NOTES
Data collection through tablets allowed partial validation and instant data cleaning, which also reduced the time spent on data processing. Responses were checked to ensure they followed the questionnaire's internal logic. In the survey, the mobile device required compliance with some consistency and completeness rules.
