Agricultural Survey [ag/oth]
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has developed a monitoring system in 26 food crisis countries to better understand the impacts of various shocks on agricultural livelihoods, food security and local value chains. The Monitoring System consists of primary data collected from households on a periodic basis (more or less every four months, depending on seasonality). FAO launched Round 7 of the DIEM-Monitoring household survey in Mozambique to assess the ongoing impact of shocks on rural livelihoods. Data collection was conducted from 26 September to 10 November 2024, during the onset of the lean season, using computer-assisted telephone interviews. The survey targeted a random sample of 1,929 households, drawn from all provinces except Maputo province and Maputo city. A one-stage simple random sample design stratified by admin1 and admin2 was applied, with agricultural/non-agricultural quotas reflecting population shares.

The DIEM Round 7 survey in Mozambique adopted a one-stage sample design using a simple random sampling approach stratified by administrative levels 1 and 2. The target sample was 3460 households, of which 1929 were successfully interviewed (1575 agricultural and 354 non-agricultural). The sampling strategy included panel households from previous rounds and new indexed samples, with quotas adjusted to reflect the population distribution. The sample covered 9 provinces (excluding Maputo province and Maputo city), and 10 hotspot districts for El Niño and conflict were specifically included. Some districts were under-represented due to post-election unrest, mobile disconnection, and insecurity.
A standard post-stratification weighting approach was applied to adjust for design and non-response biases and aims to ensure representativeness at the admin1 level. The weights reflect the sampling strata, quotas for agricultural vs non-agricultural households, and demographic characteristics.
