    Abstract

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has developed a monitoring system in 26 food crisis countries to better understand the impacts of various shocks on agricultural livelihoods, food security and local value chains. The Monitoring System consists of primary data collected from households on a periodic basis (more or less every four months, depending on seasonality). FAO and the World Food Programme (WFP) launched Round 12 of the survey in Myanmar to monitor the continued impact of shocks. Data collection started on 20 July 2025 and concluded on 26 August 2025. A hybrid methodology was adopted: 3100 CATI interviews were conducted in 12 states/regions, and 1624 CAPI interviews were carried out in hard-to-reach townships in Chin, Kachin, Kayah, Rakhine, and Sagaing. The data is representative at state/region level, with additional sub-regional coverage, and weighted by household demographics, farming engagement, and education.

    Sampling

    Sampling Procedure

The twelfth round of the DIEM-Monitoring survey in Myanmar used a hybrid sampling design combining Computer-Assisted Telephone Interviewing (CATI) and Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI). The CATI sample (3100 households) was drawn using stratified sampling by state/region (Admin 1), based on existing contact lists supplemented by Random Digit Dialing (RDD). The CAPI component (1624 households) used a two-stage cluster sampling strategy, stratified by IPC township groups in hard-to-reach and conflict-affected areas. In the first stage, clusters were selected using Probability Proportional to Size (PPS), and in the second stage, households were randomly selected within each cluster. Specific quotas and caps were applied at township level to ensure geographical representativeness and prevent oversampling in urban areas.

    Deviations from the Sample Design

While the target was 4600 households across Myanmar, the final number of completed interviews was 2552. The survey was not representative in Nay Pyi Taw and had limited representativeness in Chin, Kachin, Kayah, and Rakhine due to low sample sizes.

    Weighting

Sampling weights were applied to ensure representativeness across states and regions. The weights account for the probability of selection in both CATI and CAPI samples. For CATI, adjustments were made based on the sampling frame and stratification by region. For CAPI, design weights reflected the two-stage cluster sampling approach. Post-stratification adjustments were applied using demographic variables, household engagement in agriculture, and a wealth proxy based on the education level of the household head. Urban/rural proportions were not explicitly used in weighting.
