    Series Information

The Standardised Expanded Nutrition Survey (SENS) is a series of survey methodologies developed by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and specifically designed to consider the factors that are most relevant to refugees. SENS measures not only nutritional status data but also measures relevant other data related to household composition, anaemia, measles vaccination, vitamin A supplementation, diarrhoea and other health-related indicators, infant and young child feeding (IYCF), food availability, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), latrine usage and mosquito nets at the household-level. By collecting all this data, SENS studies provide a detailed snapshot of the nutritional health of a refugee population at a given point in time.

    Abstract

The Standardized Expanded Nutrition Surveys (SENS) provide regular nutrition data that plays a key role in delivering effective and timely interventions to ensure good nutritional outcomes in the refugee populations. Chad hosts approximately 450 000 refugees mainly originating from Sudan, Central African Republic, and Nigeria representing about 4 percent of the total population of the country. This can be explained by the security challenges caused by tensions in neighboring countries and by the macroeconomic situation of the country itself. Additionally, the Covid-19 pandemic has adversely impacted the livelihood of this already vulnerable population due to loss of means of income and reduction of revenues and support. In this context, the SENS 2021 was organized by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the World Food Programme (WFP), in collaboration with Health Ministry of Chad. Data collection took place between 17 June and 22 July 2021 and covered 25 camps of Sudanese, Central African and Nigerian refugees in the East, South, and Lake Regions of Chad, including host villages living 25 km around the camps. A total of 705 clusters of 15 320 households were surveyed, including 13 087 children between 0 and 59 months of age who were surveyed for Anthropometry. A detailed report on the nutritional situation of the various segments of the population was published together with all the relevant datasets.

    Sampling

    Sampling Procedure

The survey was conducted using two-stage cluster sampling. The methodology chosen was based on the UNHCR-SENS guidelines, whose sampling rules are derived from the SMART methodology. The sample size was computed using the Emergency Nutrition Assessment (ENA) software for SMART 2020, and by taking into account the specific characteristics of each camp in terms of desired precision, average household size, percentage of children under 5 years of age, and other relevant contextual factors.

    Survey instrument

    Questionnaires

Standardized Expanded Nutrition Survey (SENS) Version 3 questionnaires were adapted for local context and used to collect data on demography, nutrition, food security, WASH, anaemia, infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices.
