    Abstract

    The Livestock Module is one of the thematic modules of the National Census of Agriculture and Livestock (RNAE). Its implementation through an integrated approach provides a comprehensive set of information on agropastoral holdings and facilitates cross-cutting analyses to better inform agricultural and environmental policies.

    In accordance with the recommendations of the World Programme for the Census of Agriculture 2020 (WCA 2020), the supplementary “Livestock Thematic Survey” module follows the first phase of the RNAE, which focused on the enumeration and identification of households.

    The current phase aims to assess livestock numbers, structure, and dynamics, as well as animal production, and to derive zootechnical parameters for subsequent use.

    More specifically, the survey aims to:

    • describe the main characteristics of livestock production;
    • estimate household livestock populations;
    • estimate the number of animals with access to inputs;
    • assess the structure of the labour force involved in livestock production;
    • assess changes in livestock stocks over the previous 12 months;
    • describe the main characteristics of beekeeping;
    • estimate animal production by species.

    In accordance with the objectives of the integrated survey programme, the survey covers family agricultural holdings throughout the national territory, excluding the Special Zone of Conakry. The statistical units are therefore agropastoral holdings.

    Sampling

    Sampling Procedure

    The survey was designed to produce statistically reliable results at the prefecture level; therefore, the prefecture constitutes the survey domain.

    A two-stage sampling design was used. At the first stage, the primary sampling units were enumeration areas (zones de dénombrement, ZD), while at the second stage, the secondary sampling units were family agricultural holdings. The sampling frame was derived from the RNAE. To improve the representation of livestock production in the sample, the sampling frame derived from the National Census of Agriculture and Livestock (Recensement National de l’Agriculture et de l’Élevage, RNAE) was stratified into two strata at the second stage. Although stratification was applied to agricultural holdings at the second stage, it also affected the definition of the first-stage units: each ZD (j) was notionally divided according to the two strata, resulting in two corresponding first-stage units, denoted (ZD1j) and (ZD2j).

    The sample size for each prefecture was calculated to achieve a coefficient of variation of 10 percent for a number of variables. The resulting sample size for each prefecture was adjusted to account for an anticipated response rate of 85 percent and allocated across the strata in proportion to their respective weights.

    At the first stage, enumeration areas (ZDij) were selected systematically, without replacement, with probability proportional to size. At the second stage, 10 family agricultural holdings or agropastoral households were selected at random.

    In total, 15 059 family agricultural holdings were selected for the survey.

    For further details, please refer to the survey report.

    Response Rate

    99.3 percent.

    Weighting

    The variable Coef_ponderation is used as the survey weight.

    Data Collection Notes

    Data were collected as part of a cross-sectional survey conducted on an annual basis. The reference period covered May 2024 to June 2025. Data collection was carried out by the National Agency for Agricultural and Food Statistics (Agence Nationale des Statistiques Agricoles et Alimentaires, ANASA), under the Ministry of Agriculture (Ministère de l’Agriculture).

    Enumerators received in-person training prior to data collection. Data quality was monitored throughout the collection process using consistency-check scripts designed to identify potential errors and inconsistencies. Supervision was conducted both in the field, through close monitoring of enumerators, and remotely through the Survey Solutions (SuSo) platform, which was used to monitor data quality during fieldwork and developed with the help of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

    Data processing

    Data Editing

    Data cleaning and editing were performed using Stata. The main data-processing procedures included consistency checks across variables and questionnaire sections, identification and treatment of outliers, and imputation of missing and atypical values.
