As in previous censuses, the Internal Revenue Service's (SII, Servicio de Impuestos Internos) lists of rural properties by municipality were used to construct the census frame. Since the lists dated back to 1995, they were supplemented with regional surveys to identify new parcels resulting from property subdivisions that would be registered in 1996. In addition, the District Land Registry Plans (Pianos Prediales) prepared by CIREN and CORFO were used, along with INE's cartography obtained from the Population and Housing Census 1992.
The census was conducted as a complete enumeration of the holdings in the frame that met the definition of agricultural holding.
One questionnaire in paper form was used in the census.
