Agricultural Survey [ag/oth]
The 2024 Arboriculture Survey is a module of the Second General Agricultural Census (RGA II). Its purpose is to generate statistical information on tree crop production systems in Burkina Faso, including the characteristics of producers and holdings, orchard distribution, cultivated species, agricultural practices, labor, equipment, inputs, production, marketing, and production constraints. The survey covers household tree crop holdings and modern arboricultural enterprises throughout the country and produces data representative at the regional level.

The Tree Crops Survey covers two populations: (i) modern arboricultural enterprises and (ii) household-managed tree crop holdings. Modern arboricultural enterprises were covered through a census based on the listing conducted during the first phase of the Second General Agricultural Census (RGA II). Household-managed tree crop holdings were selected using a two-stage sampling design, with stratification at the second stage.
The 45 provinces of Burkina Faso constituted the study domains and were grouped into 13 administrative regions. The survey was implemented in 23 selected provinces grouped into 10 regions, and results are representative at the provincial level for the selected provinces, at the regional level for the selected regions, and at the national level.
For household-managed holdings, villages served as the primary sampling units (PSUs) and households as the secondary sampling units (SSUs). At the first stage, villages were selected without replacement using probability proportional to size (PPS) sampling, where size was measured by the number of productive trees. At the second stage, households were selected through simple random sampling without replacement.
To improve the precision of production estimates, households were stratified according to their principal tree-crop species and the scale of production. Seven strata were defined based on the main crop produced: citrus, cashew, papaya, guava, mango, pineapple, and banana.
The sample size was determined to achieve a 95 percent confidence level and a margin of error of approximately 10% for fruit production estimates. A fixed number of eight tree-crop households was selected per sampled village. The final sample comprised 2240 household tree-crop holdings distributed across 280 villages.
The variable COEF_TOT_DEF is used as the sampling weight for household-managed tree crop holdings. For modern arboricultural enterprises, no weighting is applied, as these holdings were covered through a census of all eligible units in the villages where the survey was conducted.
According to the target population (households or modern arboricultural enterprises), several questionnaires were used for data collection. Some questionnaires were administered only to a specific target group, while others were administered to all target populations.
