    Series Information

The Census of Agriculture 2003 was the fifth conducted in the Republic of Cyprus since the country achieved independence. Previous censuses were conducted in 1960, 1977, 1985, and 1994.

    Abstract

The Census of Agriculture 2003 aims to provide detailed data on agricultural and livestock holdings in Cyprus in relation to land tenure, land use, fragmentation, cultivated areas, the number of trees and animals, agricultural machinery, employment and other data on holdings as well as the characteristics of holders. The information is considered useful for the evaluation of the changes in the structure of the sector and for the formulation and implementation of new policies for agriculture and the rural areas in general. It is part of an EU-wide programme of agricultural censuses carried out in 2000 and conducted under the World Programme for the Census of Agriculture (https://www.fao.org/world-census-agriculture/en/).

    Sampling Procedure

The basic lists of holders residing in the villages were prepared with the help of local authorities, while the lists of holders residing in urban and suburban areas were prepared by the Ministry of Agriculture on the basis of the results of the Census of Population (2001) and other sources.
