Abstract
Background: Breakfast is an important meal of the day. The objective of this work is to describe the composition and nutrient supply of breakfast in individuals of the
Autonomous City of Buenos Aires.

Methods: We analyzed data from the First Food and Nutritional Survey of the City of Buenos Aires (EAN-CABA), a cross-sectional study conducted in 2011, in a probabilistic clustered sample of 5,401 individuals of different age groups: children from 0 to 6 months and their mothers, children from 7 to 23 months, preschoolers from 2 to 4 years, school children from 5 to 12 years, adolescents from 13 to 18 years, women of childbearing age (19 to 49 years) and seniors from 60 years. Information on food and beverage consumption was collected through the 24-hour recall method. In order to assess the composition of breakfast, the proportions of consumers of some food from the group of dairy products, fruits and cereals were considered.

Results: A complete breakfast was considered when it included foods from the group of dairy products, fruits cereals. Breakfast is an extended practice among the inhabitants of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, more frequent in children and the lower frequency of consumption in adolescents. It contributes between 15.4% and 17.5% of daily calories in all age groups surveyed. With this the eating occasion between a quarter to a third of the calcium and the added sugar intake per day are consumed. It does not represent a moment of commensality for most households, especially in households with adolescents. The percentage of individuals that have a complete breakfast is very low.

Conclusions: In view of the observed results it is necessary to continue working with the population, especially at early ages and adolescents, about the importance not only of making breakfast, but of including foods that ensure the best nutritional quality because of its repercussion in the global quality of the diet as in other aspects of health.
