Agricultural Census [ag/census]
The first nationwide agricultural census (AC) in Panama was conducted in 1950 through complete enumeration; the second one was carried out in 1961, on a sample basis. Other five decennial censuses were conducted, through complete enumeration, in 1971, 1981, 1991 and 2001. The most recent one, to which the metadata review and data presented here refer, was carried out in 2011.
The Agricultural Census is a large-scale statistical operation carried out every ten years to collect, process and disseminate data on the structure of the sector agricultural sector of a country or a significant part of it. Structural data Typical crops harvested are: size of farm, ownership and use of land, cultivated areas, irrigation, livestock population, labour and other inputs agricultural. The Agricultural Censuses in Panama began in 1950 when the the first truly national census. In April 1961 the Second Agricultural Census; in May 1971 and 1981 the Third and Fourth Census and in April 1991, 2001 and 2011 the Fifth, Sixth and Seventh Agricultural Census, respectively.
General objectives:
a. To collect data on the agricultural and livestock structure, mainly from the small administrative units and allow tabulations.
b. Provide data to serve as reference points, for statistics continuous farming.
c. Provide frames for agricultural sample surveys.
Specific objectives:
a. Determine the number, distribution and main characteristics of the agricultural holdings.
b. To evaluate the continuous agricultural statistics, collected during the years intercensal.
c. Provide an updated framework for future agricultural surveys.
d. Determine the impact on agriculture and livestock of the work of the agricultural promotion, both official and private.
e. Provide a wealth of data to be used in specific agricultural, industrial and commercial development.
f. To serve as a basis for international comparison of data on the sector agricultural.
g. Provide data that contribute to monitoring development objectives of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) which are the most important global goals.

The statistical unit was the agricultural holding, defined as "any extension of land used totally or partially for agricultural, livestock or forestry activities, regardless of title, size, or location, by a producer and the members of the producer's household".1

i. Methodological modality for conducting the census
The classical approach was used in the AC 2011.
ii. Frame
The PHC 2010 was undertaken less than one year before the AC 2011. A question in the PHC questionnaire allowed for the identification of households with agricultural activity. The PHC 2010 included a question to identify the households conducting agricultural holdings.
iii. Complete and/or sample enumeration methods
The AC 2011 was carried out by complete enumeration
For the AC 2011 data collection, one questionnaire was used capturing the following information:
Residence of the producer and location of the farm
Producer's and manager's general
Data on agricultural holdings and land tenure
Land use
Annual or temporary crops
Fruit, permanent industrial, medicinal and ornamental plants
Environment - agricultural practices
Use of fertilizers
Irrigation systems
Pesticides and seeds

The census covered 13 of the 16 core items recommended for the WCA 2010 round.The following items were not covered:
(i) "Presence of aquaculture on the holding"
(ii) "Presence of forest and other wood land on the holding"
(iii) "Other economic production activities of the holding's enterprise"

Reference periods:
· the agricultural year (from 1 May 2010 to 30 April 2011), for crops, purpose of production, use of machinery and equipment, income source, etc.;
· the calendar year 2010, for land tenure, temporary and permanent crops, irrigation, agricultural practices, and aquaculture;
· the week before the enumeration day, for milk, cheese and eggs production, and the quantity and value sold;
· the previous month, for employment on the holding; and
the period from 1 January 2011 to the day of the interview, for slaughtering of cattle.
DATA PROCESSING AND ARCHIVING
To obtain the census results in a timely manner, IINEC decentralized the data entry process to its regional offices in nine data capture centres. Microcomputer networks were established in each of the capture centres, consisting of a server with the Windows 2008 Server operating system, laptop computers for supervisors and data entry devices. The system for the processing of census questionnaires was developed using Microsoft Visual Studio.Net http://Studio.Net 2005, SQL Server 2008 database, CsPro 4.0.002 and Microsoft Office 2003.
CENSUS DATA QUALITY
The quality of final census data was assessed by means of control checks against sampling survey data of selected crops (coffee, sugar cane, rice, maize, etc.) and livestock.
