    Abstract

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has developed a monitoring system in 26 food crisis countries to better understand the impacts of various shocks on agricultural livelihoods, food security and local value chains. The Monitoring System consists of primary data collected from households on a periodic basis (more or less every four months, depending on seasonality). FAO launched a Round 9, randomised telephone interviews survey on 26 October 2022 to monitor agricultural livelihoods and food security in the 18 governorates of Iraq. Data collection resumed on 1 December 2022. A total of 2,583 households were interviewed (1,743 non-agricultural households and 840 agricultural households) using a panel list of agricultural households (interviewed in the previous data collection rounds) and the Random Digit Dialing (RDD) approach. Sampling

    Sampling Procedure

A total of 2,609 households were interviewed, of which 1,632 were non-agricultural households and 977 were agricultural households. The households were selected using a panel list of agricultural households which were interviewed in the previous data collection rounds, and the target was completed using the Random Digit Dialing (RDD) approach.
The sample target of 136 households per governorate was not reached only in Sulaimaniya and Maysan governorates. However, the data collected in these governorates was considered representative at governorate level because the sample size was close to the target, and the survey findings are representative at national level. Quotas could not be applied due to the small size of the agricultural population. To increase the likelihood of capturing this subgroup, a 10% precision level (margin of error) was selected, which allows for a larger sample size.

    Weighting

The weighting strategy combines demographic and socioeconomic adjustments to enhance the representativeness of the sample. The weights that were employed were computed as follows:

    • Base weights (adm1 level): These were calculated to reflect the probability of selection within each governorate. They adjust for differences in sample sizes across regions and ensure proportional representation.
    • Wealth weights (adm1 level): Access to flush toilets was used as a proxy indicator for household wealth.
    • Education-level weights (adm0 level): The education level of the household head was used as an additional proxy for socioeconomic status. Due to the absence of baseline data on religious education, respondents reporting this were recoded as having "no education." These weights were calculated at the national level (ADM0), given the lack of reliable subnational data.
