    Abstract

The Burkina Faso Continuous Multisectoral Survey (EMC, Enquête Multisectorielle Continue) 2014 was launched to meet the expanding demand of the Government of Burkina Faso to have a coherent system allowing the production of indicators for monitoring the Strategy for Growth and Sustainable Development (SCADD) and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The system should be designed so that the indicators produced are comparable and harmonized as far as possible with what is done internationally.

The EMC was administered in four rounds between January and December 2014. There is a main questionnaire with attached specialized modules implemented in one or more of the rounds. The additional specialized modules were administered to a subsample of the entire sample when a smaller sample was adequate. Administering the core questionnaire for the survey should take 30 minutes. Each additional module will also be limited to about 30 minutes. The employment and consumption modules were administered in each round.

The EMC 2014 is part of the household surveys titled Living Standards Measurement Study - Integrated Surveys on Agriculture (LSMS-ISA). The LSMS-ISA designs and implements panel household surveys representative at national level and with a strong focus on agriculture. The surveys collect data with a multi-topic approach designed to improve the understanding of the links between agriculture, socioeconomic status, and non-farm income activities, with the aim to improve the understanding of household and individual welfare, livelihoods and smallholder agriculture.

    Kind of Data

    Sample survey data [ssd]

    Unit of Analysis

The unit of measure is the household and the individuals within the household.

    Scope

    Notes

The scope of this study includes:

    • Characteristics of household members
    • The economic situation of households
    • Employment of household members aged 15 and older
    • Housing and household possessions
    • Health of the population
    • Education and access to ICTs
    • Food Safety
    • Shocks and coping strategies
    • Savings and credit access
    • Anthropometry
    • Characteristics of the plots
    • Cost of inputs
    • Agricultural equipment
    • Characteristics of the crops

    Coverage

    Geographic Coverage

    The survey is nationally representative.

    Universe

The universe includes all household members currently living in Burkina Faso. Individuals living in group households (such as academic institutions, hospitals, or military installations) are not included.

    Sampling

    Sampling Procedure

A stratified two-stage sampling technique was used in the sample:

    • In the first stage the primary units or enumeration areas (EAs), will be drawn to probability proportional to the number of households counted in the EA. A staff for each of the 905 enumeration areas will be drawn on that occasion
    • In the second stage, 12 households will be drawn in equal probability in each EA. The draw of households in the EA will be done after a listing operation whose purpose is to update the selection of households and to update the size of EAs for estimation of sampling weights. In addition to budgetary constraints and survey parameters (design effect, coefficient of variation, level of precision required), and the available data on household consumption and population projections, the size of the survey sample is fixed, taking into account the significance of requirements at national and regional levels and area of residence. The initial estimate is for a sample size of approximately 10 860 households (12 households in each of the 905 EAs)
    Weighting

Weights were calculated and used in the survey.

    Survey instrument
