Agricultural Survey [ag/oth]
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has developed a monitoring system in 26 food crisis countries to better understand the impacts of various shocks on agricultural livelihoods, food security and local value chains. The Monitoring System consists of primary data collected from households on a periodic basis (approximately every four months, depending on seasonality). In partnership with Lebanon’s Ministry of Agriculture, FAO conducted a household survey in Lebanon using Computer-Assisted Telephone Interviews (CATI) from 10 August to 7 September 2023 to monitor the impact of shocks on agricultural livelihoods and food security. A total of 1050 agricultural households were interviewed across seven governorates of Lebanon: Akkar, Baalbek-El Hermel, Bekaa, Mount Lebanon, El Nabatieh, North and South.

This fifth-round survey targeted the agricultural population, and it used the sampling frame of agricultural holdings from the 2010 Lebanon Agricultural Census (a list of almost 170 000 holdings). A total of 1050 agricultural households were interviewed across seven governorates: Akkar, Baalbek-El Hermel, Bekaa, Mount Lebanon, El Nabatieh, North and South. Using probability sampling, namely systematic sampling, 150 agricultural households were selected from each governorate. Survey results are comparable to those from previous rounds, which collected data from the same cohort of 1050 agricultural households. The survey estimates are representative at Governorate level (administrative level 1).
To ensure that the final analysis accurately reflected the structure of the agricultural population, data were weighted at the analytical stage to align with both farm size and regional population distribution, maintaining comparability with previous data collection rounds. The weighting process corrected for disproportionalities in land size and in the distribution of the farming population across governorates.
Regional strata weights were applied to adjust the data according to the actual population distribution within each region. Farm size was used as a proxy for wealth, correcting for the overrepresentation of large and specialized farms in the sample. This approach ensured that smaller farms and non-agricultural households, typically underrepresented, were adequately captured, leading to a more balanced and representative dataset for analysis.
