    Individual Food Consumption/Dietary Survey [hh/ifcs]

    Abstract

The survey explored the potential contributions made by locally available agrobiodiversity to the diets of women and children, and it developed innovative tools for measuring diverse diets as well as nutrition education tools that take into account the locally available biodiverse foods.

    Kind of Data

    Sample survey data [ssd]

    Unit of Analysis

    Individuals

    Scope

    Notes

    The survey collected information on:

    • SUBJECTS: information on the participants such as age, sex, and geographical location
    • CONSUMPTION: information on all foods consumed by each participant in each survey day, including quantities and nutrient values

    Coverage

    Geographic Coverage

    Sub-national coverage, only rural areas.

    Universe

The population groups covered in the survey were women of reproductive age and children under 3 years old.

    Sampling

    Sampling Procedure

The sample was stratified by livelihood zone, distinguishing between agro-pastoral and pastoral zones. Within each livelihood zone, three villages were randomly selected from a sampling frame of 21 villages (15 agro-pastoral and 6 pastoral) in Loima Sub-County, Turkana County. The final sample comprised 442 participants, of whom 221 were women of reproductive age and 221 were their infants.

    Weighting

No survey weights were used in this survey.

    Data Collection Notes

Dietary assessment of children and their caregivers was conducted using the multi-pass quantitative 24-hour food intake recall method. First, respondents were asked to report on all foods and beverages consumed during the preceding 24 hours. Then they were asked to describe the foods and beverages consumed, including ingredients and cooking methods for mixed dishes. The amounts of all foods, beverages, and ingredients of mixed dishes consumed were estimated either in weight, household units (the volume was determined by water content), or in monetary value. The proportion of what was consumed by the respondent was then determined based on the volume consumed and the total volume of the dish cooked. This proportion was used to calculate the amount of ingredients consumed in their raw forms. For dishes consumed outside the home, standard recipes were prepared and they were used to determine the amount of ingredients consumed by the respondent.

Intake data was entered and processed in Lucille, a specialized dietary intake software application developed by the University of Ghent, Belgium. After uploading a food composition table and entering quantitative food intake data per person per day, the software generates the individual nutrient intake estimates.
