Agricultural Survey [ag/oth]
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has developed a monitoring system in 26 food crisis countries to better understand the impacts of various shocks on agricultural livelihoods, food security and local value chains. The Monitoring System consists of primary data collected from households on a periodic basis (more or less every four months, depending on seasonality). FAO and the World Food Programme (WFP) launched a Round 5, randomised telephone interviews survey from 10 December 2022 to 27 January 2023 in Myanmar. The random sample targetted 4,200 households (300 per States/Region) in the 14 States/Regions: Ayeyarwady, Yangon, Bago, Magway, Mandalay, Sagaing, Chin, Kayin, Kayah, Mon, Shan, Kachin, Tanintharyi, and Rakhine.

Surveys are designed based on country-specific needs, objectives, and constraints. They aim to achieve a 10 percent margin of error, a 95 percent confidence level, administrative-level granularity, and sufficient sample sizes for key target populations, including agricultural households.
A total sample of 4200 households (300 per selected State/Region) wasintended to be interviewed over a 30-day period. Phone numbers from previous survey rounds were reused and supplemented through Random Digit Dialing (RDD).
Because agricultural households were the primary subgroup of interest for FAO, a minimum quota of 140 agricultural households per stratum was established within the 300-household sample for both RDD and panel interviews. In Yangon Region, however, the quota was reduced to 100 agricultural households. To identify eligible respondents, a screening question on agricultural activity was asked at the beginning of each interview. GeoPoll and WFP monitored daily progress in reaching both agricultural and non-agricultural households.
As in previous rounds, FAO and WFP also applied respondent caps for highly urbanized townships, typically State/Region capitals, in order to avoid oversampling urban populations. These caps set the maximum number of respondents that could be interviewed in a given township and were proportional to township population size. The approach had been successfully implemented in earlier survey rounds to maintain a more balanced and representative sample distribution. In addition, FAO established minimum quotas for households relying on agricultural livelihoods.
Ultimately, a total of 3948 households were interviewed.
The weighting approach incorporates key demographic and socioeconomic variables to improve the representativeness of the sample:
