    Series Information

Myanmar participated in the World Census of Agriculture in 1953/1954. However, the coverage of that census was limited to 2143 village tract in a neighborhood of 252 townships. A Sample Census of Agriculture was conducted in 1993, followed by a complete coverage census in 2003. The Census of Agriculture 2010 is the fourth census to be conducted in the country.

    Abstract

The Census of Agriculture 2010 is a large scale statistical operation that collects data on the structure of agriculture which is necessary for socioeconomic analyses and for the planning of policies for the agricultural sector.

    3. Type of Soil Existing in the Village Tract
    4. Topographical Features of the Villages in the Village Tract
    5. Mode of Transport
    6. Economic Activities
    7. Existence of Seasonal Labor Movement
    8. Prone to Disaster Within Previous Five Years
    9. Agricultural Land Area
    10. Number of Times of Crop Cultivation
    11. Agro-processing Equipment/Machines
    12. Available School
    13. Communication Facilities
    14. Health Facilities
    15. Water Facilities
    16. Access to Roads and Markets
    17. Presence of Women's Organization

    Coverage

    Geographic Coverage

The Census of Agriculture 2010 covered the entire country, with the exception of certain remote areas and highly urbanized areas.

    Universe

The statistical unit was the agricultural holding, defined as an economic unit of agricultural production under single management, comprising all livestock kept and all land used wholly or partly for agricultural production purposes, exceeding a certain physical threshold, regardless of title and legal form.

Two main types of holdings were distinguished in the census:

    • Household agricultural holdings
    • Special holdings, which included holding operated by non-household holdings (corporations, institutions, etc.) and by "special households"

The following minimum thresholds were applied to agricultural holdings:

    • 1 large livestock (cattle/buffalo/donkey/mule)
    • 4 small livestock (sheep/goat/pig)
    • 30 poultry (chicken/duck/quail)
    • 0.05 acres (202.3m2) of land used wholly or partly in crop cultivation

    Sampling

    Sampling Procedure

The core module was collected by complete enumeration for all holdings in the country. Supplementary modules were collected by complete enumeration only for large agricultural holdings, aquaculture holdings and urban agricultural holdings, and by sample enumeration for other holdings.

A listing of households was undertaken between February and March 2009 and it was used for data collection for the core module.

Given that 2009 frame was obsolete when data collection for the supplementary modules begun, two-stage sampling was implemented to select 20 percent of villages in each township using probability proportional to size sampling. Subsequently, a complete listing of all households in the sampled villages was carried out to update the 2009 frame. Then, holdings were selected with systematic sampling, and a third of small agricultural holdings was selected.

    Survey instrument

    Questionnaires

Four questionnaires were used to collect holding-level data:

    • Form A: for crop cultivation
    • Form B: for the keeping or breeding of livestock
    • Form C: for aquaculture holdings
    • Form D: the household questionnaire

Further Form F, a village-tract questionnaire, was used for the community survey.

The questionnaires covered all 16 core items recommended in the WCA 2010.

Census activities employed 5877 field enumerators and 1179 field supervisors.

The census was carried out in two stages:

    • First stage, 15 February to 31 March 2009: data for the core module of the census was collected, and a listing of households was carried out to identify all family farms
    • Second stage, 15 February to 31 March 2011: data for the supplementary modules was collected

    Data processing

    Data Editing

Manual data entry was used, and sketch maps were produced manually (by hand-drawing). Data editing, imputation, validation, and tabulation were conducted by a working group using CSPro software.
