Agricultural Survey [ag/oth]
In 1985, a qualitative survey with estimates based on expert opinion was conducted. For the other years, figures were derived from trends based on demographic projections from the National Institute of Statistics and Demography (Institut National de la Statistique et de la Démographie, INSD) and other expert assessments.
The first quantitative sample survey was conducted in 1993, marking the beginning of the Permanent Agricultural Survey (Enquête Permanente Agricole, EPA).
The EPA was therefore established as a permanent survey in 1993 and has been carried out annually ever since. Its primary purpose is to provide information on the main agricultural aggregates (agricultural production, cultivated area, yields, etc.) as well as food security. The survey targets agricultural households and farms engaged in rain-fed and/or dry-season cropping.
It is implemented by the Ministry responsible for agriculture through the Directorate General for Sectoral Studies and Statistics (Direction générale des études et des statistiques sectorielles, DGESS).
The 2024/2025 EPA represents the 32nd edition of the survey.
The 2024-2025 EPA makes it possible to estimate agricultural production by crop and by province with a 95 percent confidence level and a margin of error of ±10 percent. In addition, it covers several other topics related to agriculture, including:
The survey targets two types of agricultural holdings: those located in developed/irrigated areas and those located in non-developed (non-irrigated) areas.

The EPA sample consists of 5304 households distributed across 884 villages. Data collection for the EPA is conducted over a six-month period, from July to December.
The objective is to estimate agricultural production by crop and by province with a 95 percent confidence level and a margin of error of ±10 percent.

Sampling Method
A complete enumeration of developed agricultural sites is produced through administrative records by the Regional Directorates for Agriculture, Animal and Fisheries Resources (DRARAH), particularly for rice and maize production.
A sample is selected using a two-stage sampling design with stratification based on agricultural potential.
First stage: Classification of villages into two strata
Second stage: Classification of households into two strata
Combining the village stratification (first stage) and the household stratification (second stage) results in four sampling strata:
Substitutions were carried out at both the primary sampling unit (PSU) level and the secondary sampling unit (SSU) level, while maintaining the established stratification framework.
However, due to the limited number of accessible primary sampling units in certain provinces (Gourma, Gnagna, Tapoa, Komondjari, Kompienga, and Loroum), the number of secondary sampling units was increased in order to preserve the required sample size.
Sampling weights are applied to account for the complex stratified sampling design.
The weight assigned to each household reflects:
The final household weight is calculated as the product of three components:

Access to the data shall be restricted to the principal investigator, students, and other research team members identified in the data request form.
Data files, including any files derived from these data, shall not be shared with anyone other than the research team members identified in this agreement, unless formal authorization is granted by the Directorate General for Sectoral Studies and Statistics (DGESS) of the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal and Fisheries Resources (MAERAH).
The data shall be used exclusively for statistical or scientific research purposes and under no circumstances for the investigation of natural or legal persons. The results of this work shall be presented in the form of aggregated statistics. The data may not be used for administrative, property-related, or legal purposes.
The principal investigator must notify any intention to merge the data files with individual-level data from another source or study. In such cases, detailed information must be provided to the DGESS-MAERAH regarding the nature of the files and the purpose of the data linkage. Any dataset resulting from such a merger shall be treated in the same manner as the original data files supplied by the data provider and shall be subject to the same access and use conditions.
The principal investigator guarantees that adequate measures will be taken to prevent access to the data by unauthorized persons. The data files shall be destroyed upon completion of the research project unless DGESS-MAERAH receives satisfactory assurances that the data will be securely retained and the recipient organization obtains formal authorization to keep them. Destruction of the data files shall be confirmed in writing by the principal investigator.
Any book, article, publication, thesis, report, or other work using data obtained from the data provider shall cite the data source in accordance with the specified conditions. However, the researcher must clearly distinguish between data generated through their own analyses and data provided by DGESS-MAERAH.
An electronic copy of all reports and publications (excluding books) produced using these data shall be submitted to DGESS-MAERAH and to the National Institute of Statistics and Demography (INSD).
This agreement shall take effect on the date authorization to use the data is granted and shall remain valid until the completion of the research project (whether as originally planned or completed earlier than anticipated).
If changes are made to the project definition, security arrangements, personnel, or organization described in this agreement, it is the responsibility of the principal investigator to obtain DGESS-MAERAH's approval for such changes. If the principal investigator changes organization, a new application for authorization to use the data must be submitted, as this agreement shall no longer be valid.
Violations of this agreement shall be carefully reviewed by DGESS-MAERAH, which shall take appropriate action against those responsible, whether the violations are intentional or accidental. Failure to comply with this agreement may result in legal proceedings. DGESS-MAERAH shall maintain a record of individuals and organizations responsible for such violations, may share this record with other archives and data centers, and may impose restrictions on future access to data by those individuals and organizations.
