    Series Information

    Agricultural modules were incorporated into the Population and Houses Censuses (PHC) 2002, 2012 and 2017. Although, in the first two rounds the agricultural module was not processed, and the results were not published. The last round, conducted by the Central Statistics Division (CSD), was the fifth PHC since the country gained independence in 1978.

    Abstract

    The objective of the agricultural module of the Population and Housing Census 2017 was to gather information on the current state of the agriculture sector in Tuvalu, including information on the characteristics of the households engaged in the agriculture sectors and its subsectors.

    Agricultural-related data were collected by including an agricultural module with 19 questions in the PHC 2017.

    Universe

    The statistical unit in the PHC 2017, and consequently of the agricultural module, was the household, defined as a social unit consisting of a person living alone or a group of persons who sleep in the same housing unit and have a common arrangement in the preparation and consumption of food.

    Only the buildings which contain living quarters, whether occupied or vacant, were covered by the PHC 2017.

    Sampling Procedure

    For the PHC 2017, the country was divided into Enumeration Areas (EA), the smallest geographical unit in which complete enumeration of all households, including those with agricultural activities, was conducted.

    Questionnaires

    One questionnaire was used in the PHC 2017 which included the agricultural module. The questionnaire covered 7 out of 23 essential items recommended in the WCA 2020.

    The census personnel comprised 34 enumerators, 13 supervisors and 6 headquarters staff.

    Data processing

    Data Editing

    The Central Statistics Division was responsible for the enumeration, coding, editing, verification, and processing of all household questionnaires collected during the Census. Technical assistance and support in questionnaire design, data processing and analysis was provided by the Pacific Community. The data items were encoded and processed using the Census and Survey Processing System (CSPro) software package. Data analysis was undertaken using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software.
